The immigration debate turns to the economy
Posted on November 14, 2008
If pro-immigration groups can make a solid case 1) that the U.S. economy benefits from current and future immigrants, and 2) that the current immigrant crackdown is emblematic of the hate and fear of Bush administration era not of the values of the new Obama America, then sensible and fair immigration reform might be a political possibility.

El Paso and the Obama Administration
Posted on November 8, 2008
El Paso backed Hillary Clinton early on, and that might not be forgotten. Regardless, members of both parties in El Paso ought to debrief and to strategize about the political future both locally and in relation to the new presidential administration.
Emanuel's Political Pragmatism on Immigration Reform
Posted on November 7, 2008
Obama's selection of Rahm Emanuel as his chief of staff signals that political pragmatism, not campaign promises to Latinos, may determine immigration policy in the new administration.
Open Letter to Conservatives
Posted on November 6, 2008
No crying. I can't say it enough. We must not turn into the Democrats circa 2000 or 2004. Move on and don't make excuses – make plans.
Dee Margo was too good for El Paso
Posted on November 6, 2008
When I opined this to my dad, he admonished me saying he didn’t appreciate comments like this about his city and he vowed to continue to work on El Paso’s behalf. Sorry dad, but I don’t have the same patience or unconditional love you do for this city.
It's a stirring moment, but nothing's changed yet
Posted on November 5, 2008
Obama said it best: "This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change." Let's keep those words in mind in the trying times to come.
Obama, Democrats out for revenge
Posted on November 3, 2008
Obama's admission that he's all for paying those people who don't work out of the pockets of those people who do work in order to get elected is scary. You get the butter, I'll get the knives – we'll start practicing carving statues of Stalin right after dinner.
Speed dating with candidates
Posted on November 2, 2008
I had already voted before meeting all the candidates on Charlando, and had I met some of them before I voted, I would have voted differently. (Try hiding that realization from your face when interviewing a candidate.)
Readers Respond 11.02.08
Posted on November 2, 2008
The NPT website gives our readers the option to post comments to articles as a Readers Response, if the response isn't profane and filled with personal attacks, we post it. This week, we had some very colorful and critical responses to our work, in particular several furious responses pointing our sloppy reporting filled with spelling and grammatical errors; we're adressing that issue immediately. ;0)

Hey undecided voters, look beyond the Ferragamos!
Posted on October 29, 2008
The bummer about you undecided voters is that sometimes it feels like you make decisions based on what people are wearing, because if you would just take the time to learn the facts, it would be easy to make up your mind.
Early voting records fall; Arditti hitting credit cards to finance race
Posted on October 27, 2008
Arditti has reported spending just over $170,000 in her primary race and runoff and general election races. One thing really stands out in her campaign finance totals: Of the $170,116 she has reported spending, she has only raised $27,223 in outside contributions.
Open Letter to Judge Cobos
Posted on October 17, 2008
I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but you're up for re-election soon, and you're losing it. I'm afraid the voters here in town may not trust you enough to re-elect you.
Why I Voted Against a Bailout for a Greedy Wall Street

Like many people I have spoken to, I believe handing $700 billion to those who are responsible for getting us where we are now is unacceptable.
The Moody blues

The District 78 race is great because the candidates are so different. Voters have a real choice. But last week, the conversation was about a blog.
Making it harder for people to vote is undemocratic
Posted on October 9, 2008
There is absolutely no evidence of widespread voter fraud. But politicians seem bent on complicating voting, rather than making it easier. Moreover, election-day intimidation occurs frequently.
Change you can't believe in
Posted on October 8, 2008
Go ahead and claim your victory. Scream at the top of your lungs, "My guy won! My guy won!" Just remember in a few years from now when things haven't changed and you're still unhappy that your foolish pride put you right back where you started.
My friends, Obama corrals "Maverick"
Posted on October 8, 2008
McCain tried to show his comfort with the format by telling jokes throughout the evening, but he was the only one letting out a (nervous) laugh. I thought the town-hall style was supposed to be McCain's strength?
"USA! USA! USA!"
Posted on October 4, 2008
There is something I find creepy about seeing elected officials and presidential candidates cultivating the deep boom of the masses in nationalistic mantras. Such mantras need no qualification, no thought, no nuance and most importantly, no humility. They require only guttural emotion.
Desert dreams

I'm all for progress and expansion, but we really need to take stock now. The desert isn't empty nor is it something to be pushed and plowed over simply because there's room to grow.
