Contest Deadline Approaching

The Deadline to submit entries to the Ray Mickens Reading Contest is Thursday, November 20. Entries can be submitted to any public library facility c/o the Ray Mickens Reading Contest. Entries must be authorized by a parent AND a teacher or librarian. For more information, visit www.elpasolibrary.org.
The Ray Mickens Champions Fund would like to invite youths in grades sixth, seventh and eighth to take part in the Ray Mickens Reading Contest 2008. There will be grand prize winners from each category. The winners will receive a free all expenses paid trip to see the Dallas Cowboys play live at Texas Stadium. Entrants must submit a one page essay for each of 5 books or news articles read. The books must be from the American Library Association’s (ALA) Newberry Medal list or the Texas Library Associations (TLA) Lone Star Reading List and must be more than 90 pages in length. The essays must contain an authorizing signature by both a parent AND a teacher or librarian. The entries should be submitted to all participating schools or to any public library facility care of the Ray Mickens Reading Contest. Deadline for entries is November 20, 2008.

The package includes 4 tickets to see the Dallas Cowboys play the Baltimore Ravens on December 20, 2008 at Texas Stadium; one free weekend car rental courtesy of Enterprise Rent A Car; two night hotel stay courtesy of the Ray Mickens Champions Fund and a $100 savings certificate redeemable at First Light Credit Union.

Ray Mickens has distinguished himself off the field as well as on the field. Since joining the National Football League in 1996, he has made it a point to give back to the El Paso community by supporting educational efforts directed at encouraging youths to read and learn.

Mickens says, “I would like all the kids out there to know that reading is one of the most important things that you can do to be successful. Sports are an important way to stay healthy, mentally and physically, but reading and education can open many doors that would otherwise be shut.”

Official Rules:
Open to students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
Entrants should read 5 books or news articles.
Books should be Newberry Medal Award Winners or from the Texas Library Association’s Lone Star Reading List.
Books should be 90 pages or more in length.
Submit a one page essay for each of the 5 books or articles read.
Entries should contain authorizing signatures from one parent AND a teacher or librarian.
Entries should be submitted to all participating schools or Public Library facilities care of the Ray Mickens Reading Contest.
Students will be judged on how well they understand key points in each story or article.
Deadline for entries if November 20, 2008.
