UTEP Union Gallery Presents:
Redefining Walls
11.01.08-The UTEP Union Gallery proudly presents Redefining Walls, a group exhibition that sets out to interpret the contemporary relationship between the United States and Mexico. Redefining Walls will be on exhibit at the UTEP Union Gallery, 2nd floor Union East, from November 20, 2008 to January 5, 2009with reception to take place on the evening of November 20, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Featuring El Paso artists, Kelly Eoff, Dave Ford, Jason Lucero, Zeque Penya, and Keith Allyn Spencer, Redefining Walls explores how each of the five artists interpret the U.S./Mexico relationship either by responding to the physical presence of walls or by portraying imagery that conveys human immigration and movement.
Curated by Exhibition Practices II students and led by Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts Director and Lecturer, Kate Bonansinga, Redefining Walls is a physical culmination of a year’s learning.

About the artists:

Kelly Eoff is currently a UTEP student and will create paintings that connote human migratory activity for the exhibition.

Dave Ford is a conceptual sculptor who lives in El Paso and plans to explore the cliché of The Tortilla Curtain and the effectiveness of the border wall.

Jason Lucero intends to address the duality of our existence as humans when we live on a border. He will produce a work that exists as a whole but is separated by a wall.

Zeque Penya is an El Pasoan whose work focuses in Chicano/Latino film and video as well as print making. Zeque is best known for his spontaneous works and will be painting live during the November 20th reception.

Keith Allyn Spencer will be creating one large graphscape painting that represents the narrative quality of the walls in our border city. The image will depict the walls that have always surrounded him in both El Paso and Juarez.
